What is a sediment filter?

Sediment filters are designed to capture and remove sand, silt, dirt and rust from water. Sediment filters protect water treatment systems (such as water softeners or UV water sterilizers) as well as water-carrying equipment by removing these particles from sediment filters used in well water and peri-house applications.

Although these particles, called suspended matter, are invisible to the naked eye, they are almost always present in untreated water.

Do I need a whole house sediment filter?

Sediment filters block the particles and sand that can contaminate your water filtration system, clog your home plumbing, and shorten the life of water-using appliances like dishwashers, coffee makers, and water heaters.

Sediment can also reduce the effectiveness of UV water filtration systems by hindering the ability of UV light to reach disease-causing microorganisms in the water. If sediment isn't filtered out before the whole-home water softener, sand or silt can get into the system and scratch and damage the delicate moving parts of the water softener.

Since sediment filters are often very inexpensive, the protection they provide is often worth the extra cost.

How to remove sediment from well water
Well water often contains high levels of organic matter and suspended solids. PP cotton filters are designed to capture and filter out these particles.

Which sediment filter you need depends on your water quality and the type of filter you may have installed.

Sediment filters are measured in "microns". A water filter's micron rating indicates how much contamination the filter can capture and remove. The absolute value is the largest hole and the "nominal" rating is the average hole size.
